Have you ever wondered what your purpose is on earth?
You’re not alone. “Who Am I” is one of the most asked questions, even by Christians.
The truth is we can only really live a life a purpose if we know who we are and we can only really know who we are if we know the one who created us in the first place. The one who created us is God - who is a spirit (John 4 v 24).
Who is God?
God in Hebrew is translated as Elohim, which means: the Supreme God and a ruler. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1 v 1). To create something means to bring something into existence that was never there before. God created man in his own image (Genesis 1 v 27). If God is a spirit and we are created in God’s image then we also have a spirit.
Who Am I?
We have a spirit, a soul and a body. Our spirit is our human nature, it’s a conscious, where we know right from wrong. It’s the part of us that knows something without knowing how we know it. Our soul is our mind, will and emotions. Our soul is the part of us where we do our thinking and imagining. And our body is what everyone sees, it connects us to the world, through out five senses (taste, touch, smell, hear, sight).
What is our purpose?
Genesis 1 v 28 - And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
This verse tells us that we were created to:
Be Fruitful – meaning to show fruitfulness and grow from within
Multiply – meaning to enlarge and increase exceedingly what you already have
Replenish – to be full, abundance, overflow
Subdue – meaning to bring into subjection
Have dominion – meaning to rule, to dominate
If we are a spirit being, then the only way we can truly live a life of purpose is by allowing our spirits to become dominant by listening to our conscience and doing spiritual things.
What things are spiritual?
Reading, studying and meditating on bible scriptures
Praying
Fasting
Thanksgiving, Praise, and Worship
Once we become born again, the way it should work is the Holy Spirit speaks to our human spirit. Our spirit helps our soul (mind, will and emotions) to process and understand the information that our spirit knows, and our soul should influence our actions and what our body does. This is how we are to live and fulfil our purpose in life by following the direction of the Holy Spirit and being obedient to the Word of God.
However, many of us struggle in this area by allowing our soul to remain dominant, which means that we choose to be led by our will, our emotions and our desires, instead of submitting to God’s will, emotions and desires for us. If we choose to live the life that we were born to live by submitting to God’s will for our lives, then we will fulfil purpose because God will be revealing it to us.
What we really need to have is soul control. We need to not let our emotions run wild, we need to not let negative thoughts lead us down the path of despair. We can only really have soul control though if our soul is submitted to our spirit and if we consciously choose to allow our spirit to become dominant. God is love (1 John 4 v 8), and he loves us too much to want us to lead ourselves. But we all have been given free will, which means that God is not going to impose his will on us. We must desire to want to do God’s will to fulfil our purpose. God is always there, all we need to do is ask him to help us to submit to him and his way, and he’ll show us how. You can say these short declarations:
I am beautifully and wonderfully made
I am made in the image of God
I am blessed and have purpose in Christ
Even if you don’t believe it now, if you say it long enough, you’ll start to believe it! Living the Blessed Life requires us to know who God is and who we are in God. Ask God to reveal himself to you in a new light and who you are in him in – God likes it when you ask him!
